As a retired elementary assistant principal, I would like to reflect on the learning theories and instructional design models that I liked to follow. After many years of researching various learning theories, I have found that Constructivist Learning Theory has been successful online and on my former campuses.  Even though, we tend to use an integration of several theories, I leaned more towards using this one for implementation of my online course.  Hopefully the online teaching strat4gies consist of shared interactions that will result in learning experiences such as, peer activities and real-world problem solving.   As I was comparing this theory to the theories of Behaviorism and Cognitivism, this one makes me responsible for guiding our learners towards solving new problems.  The Behaviorism Theory are considered expected responses which are just repetition and reinforced skills.  As for the Cognitivism Theory, it is considered as recalling stored information.

Constructivism is a learning theory that emphasizes the student’s construction of reality (Driscoll, 2000).  According to Driscoll (2000), students are not just waiting around for information to be dumped inside their minds but to be engaged seeking understanding the world around them.  This is what I want our learners to be able to do---be problem solvers.

I was able to implement the Science TEKS on my UbD plan into my learning environment by integrating intervention strategies.  During the face to face trainings, I will use my essential questions to assure that my learners will know how to develop lesson plans for every student, especially those that are struggling.  The UbD plan is well designed that includes essential questions which my learners can use as a guide.  It allows them to list any modifications/adjustments that they can make before, during or after the lesson.  It is important to design a plan beforehand to assure that strategies and materials are available for all students especially those that are struggling

It is important that my learners analyze their students’ assessment results. Many educators like to just tell their students that they either pass or fail a test which gives no visual feedback on why and how they did wrong.  Stage 3 which is the Learning Plan is a well-developed form that allows my learners to include learning activities.  This is an excellent form for all educators to use every time they are preparing to teach a different concept throughout the year.  Educators can add/delete/modify this form as needed.

I strongly feel all students’ learning should be connected and of importance in their real world.  My students constantly used to say such things as, I do not need to know Science because I am going to work in a store.  So, I had to display examples on how they could use Science concepts when working in a store.  Relevance learning should mean effective learning if our lesson plans are aligned correctly.  We need to provide activities that students can use higher order thinking skills, so they can become problem solvers.  They need to learn outside the box which they can obtain through online learning.  This also allows them to obtain other information on what they are learning either through Internet resources or through collaboration activities with their peers.  Many times, students get motivated by viewing online videos that gives them reinforcement of the concept they are learning.  Learners need to be aware that online learning provides more up to date information and opportunities to collaborate with other learners throughout the world.

Who else besides parents can provide the students see the relevance in content?  The teachers need to be the motivators by tapping into a student’s cognitive need to make them aware of how they will need to know how to solve problems.  Even though students learn through video games, they need to know the relevance of both personal and real-world understanding.  Eventually, we hope that this can help students realize how useful their knowledge can be in the future.

Designing an online course had never crossed my mind before never the less to attempt to design one.  After this experience, I feel confident that I have learned the core process of designing one.  Most important is that I predesign the course on paper first and then transfer it online.  I also learned that having an online course is stronger by adding face to face meetings.  Some learners might give up if they are unable to complete assignments on their own.  The purpose is for them to be expose to blended learning with the assistance of their teachers.  There are several things that I noted that I need to remember for next time.  We should always start with a conceptual foundation to get positive results.  My final thoughts are when designing an online course is to think about how I can build a house.  All contractors start with a blueprint to start with the frame.  Therefore, this is the same process as designing a course.

It is considered as the only learning management system (LMS) that connects all the people, content and systems that fuel education. I considered it to have a solid learning management system.  Since I am not a tech guru, I feel comfortable when I can work with an easy to navigate system.  It is self-explanatory which I would highly recommend to older administrators and educators that would like to design a course.  It was easy for me to setup the folders and input my information.  I still need to learn more about their new assessment management platform that is designed for K-12 and Higher Ed.

This is an awesome LMS.  One can read Moodle stories from around the world with positive results.  It helps one how to easily setup and how to use its’ available resources.  The Moodle Project is supported by over 70 certified Moodle Partners globally.  I was able to explore it to determine if it was easily to navigate.  There are examples of screencasts displaying various themes and layouts. I found it interesting on how to edit, move, add, delete and link course sections.  I will strongly recommend this LMS to my colleagues.

It has 4 ½ stars out of 5 ranking.  It connects over 33 million teachers and students while safely connecting them through online classrooms and collaborating on assignments.  Their main purpose is to connect all learners with people and resources needed to reach their full potential.  I like that it was founded by educators who really know what it needed for teachers, students and parents. It contains over 650 million resources---wow.  The school districts use it with real-time analytics that measure activity an engagement.  This is a great tool to monitor both teachers’ and students’ activity to ensure that they are collaborating with the others. I used it before for locating lessons for my friends in order to prepare for their annual observation.

Planning Questions

22.  How and where will they submit assignments?

There will be a section designated for them to upload their assignments. Since this is also a face to face course, they will be able to submit them on campus if they have trouble uploading.

23.  Will the pacing or your course be the same for everyone or will you have self-pacing?

I will have self-pacing for those that would like to get ahead and feel confidence with their work.  But they will be closely monitored to assure 85% mastery or higher.  There will be no pressure on those that need the extra time or assistance.

24.  How will you communicate with learners?

I will communicate with my learners by weekly face to face meetings.  We will exchange emails, texts or whatever other communication way they feel comfortable with.  I will also conduct class observations in case they need clarifications or assistance.

25.  If your learners are K-12, how will parents be involved?

My learners in this course are teachers.

26.  How will you update your course?

I will try to update my course every week and inform the learners of the changes.  As I see fit that there is a need for positive update during the course, I will do so.
